Hanna Sobachko-Shostak Decorative panel with two women figures 1922-1923 watercolor on paper . National Museum of Decorative Arts of Ukraine
Hanna-Sobachko-Shostak represents the so-called "village avant-garde", a group of self-taught peasant artists who worked alongside Exter, Malevich, and other avant-gardists at workshops in the village of Skoptsi (now Veselynivka),Kyiv Oblast.
Hanna was from a poor peasant family but was introduced to art through embroidery as a child. Hanna had such a fresh and natural sense of art that she was given her own room to create. Hanna Sobachko-Shostak's artwork looks almost like a surreal portrait.
