Pysanky ( plural of pysanka) were revered as talisman. For the ancients, holding a pysanka in one's hand was a way of harnessing the power of the sun. Some of the most common symbols used :
Deer and horses represent prosperity. Pine needles symbolize youth and health. Birds represent fertility and the fulfillment of wishes. Triangles represent the Holy Trinity. Fish represent Christ from the Greek acrostic. A line encircling the egg without a beginning or an end represents eternal life.
Most common used are hen eggs that are often gifted or exchanged among friends during the Easter season.
